  • Linköping University (LiU) is a research based university known for excellence in education. With its roots in the late 1960:ies it is renowned for its innovative educational spirit, and its long–standing tradition of cross-disciplinary studies and research. The dual criteria of scientific excellence and societal benefit are guiding principles for the university’s strategic enterprises. Education and research is conducted within four faculties: Arts and Sciences, Educational Sciences, Health Sciences & Medicine and the Institute of Technology. Student population counts 27,000 of which 10 per cent are international, total number of staff 3,900, total income are 3,3 billion Swedish crowns (approx. 490 million US$) more than half of it goes into research. LiU is organized in broad, multi-disciplinary and cross-faculty departments, a framework that facilitates cooperation across disciplines and faculty borders. This, together with an ongoing dialogue with industry and society at large has been essential for the university’s ability to combine basic and applied research in thematic and innovative contexts. Communication Electronics, Organic Bioelectronics, Nanotechnology & Functional Materials, Medical Visualization & Simulation, Disability research are examples of areas that have been appointed centres of excellence by the Swedish research councils. Other examples of important research areas are entrepreneurship and innovation, environmental sciences, migration studies, gender studies and adult learning. LiU offers education at basic (Bachelor’s), advanced (Master’s) and PhD level. There is a clear focus on study programmes leading to advanced professional degrees within areas such as engineering, management, teaching and medicine. Well-structured, integrated and interdisciplinary study programmes form the core of our education. Linköping University is dedicated toward developing models for student-centred learning with approaches such as problem-based learning, portfolio pedagogics and project orientation. A variety of programmes of continuing education at Master’s level taught in Swedish or English give students an opportunity to gain the competitive edge that can spur a professional career.
